It was the change in the air – the subtle but unmissable shift in the trees and the grass – that Bambi noticed first.

The young fawn had been grazing peacefully, his head dipped into a succulent patch of fresh grass. It was a glade he’d ventured to many times, a place of tranquility and peace where he could feed without fear. There were no predators, no hunters, no hidden threats…

But on this day, something was different.

Danger has an inexplicable way of making its presence known before ever truly revealing itself. Call it an instinct, perhaps a precognition… however one chooses to define it, this moment of knowing can come and pass within the same instant. In a single surge of sudden, reasonless terror, we know that doom is upon us. And all too often, the same moment that gifts us this foresight also robs us of our one, fleeting chance to save ourselves.

By the time young Bambi had felt the air change around him, it was already too late.

The massive, scaly foot of a towering behemoth descended upon the deer with blink-and-you’ll-miss-it swiftness, affording the comparatively tiny mammal barely enough time to begin craning his head skyward toward the source of his sudden unease. The three-clawed foot came to rest violently amidst the flowers of the glade, sitting flush with the soil as its reverberating impact rang through the disturbed air around it.

The only grisly indicators of Bambi’s previously uncompromised presence were four ungainly, hoof-tipped legs that protruded from under the sides of the titanic foot.

Silence returned to the forest once again. Godzilla flexed the curled claws of his deer-murdering toes, satisfied that the easiest confrontation of his life had – albeit predictably – been won.
