“Children will always be afraid of the dark, and men with minds sensitive to hereditary impulse will always tremble at the thought of the hidden and fathomless worlds of strange life which may pulsate in the gulfs beyond the stars, or press hideously upon our own globe in unholy dimensions which only the dead and moonstruck can glimpse…”

H.P. Lovecraft, Supernatural Horror in Literature

“I have seen beyond the bounds of infinity and drawn down daemons from the stars… I have harnessed the shadows that stride from world to world to sow death and madness…”

PROLOGUE

Deep space.

Amidst the inky expanse of eternal nothingness, only the faint light of distant stars illuminated the dark. Aside from this light, nothing existed here. Nothing moved. Nothing lived.

And then, something changed.

For the briefest of moments, the darkness was lit by a brilliant golden shine. In the blink of an eye, it had moved on, leaving the darkness to return once more. Silence returned to the void.

Then, another gold flash.

And then another. And another.

The golden light was now coming faster, rushing through space in the form of huge, glowing orbs. Their bright shine obscured any finer details, and would surely have blinded any unfortunate viewer, should one have been present to witness their coming. Their intense light came from within, from the cosmic energy they contained. Precious fuel that must reach its destination intact.

Finally, the last golden light faded into the distance, its shine lost amongst the countless stars that blanketed the universe. With their passing, the silence and the stillness returned. But only for the briefest of moments.

From the distant darkness slowly emerged an abhorrent form, a massive shape that bore the most striking of silhouettes. Jagged spikes and conical points defined its outline, and a crystalline shine emanated from across its surface. Its perfect symmetry betrayed it as being neither an asteroid nor a simple meteor. From its brilliantly shimmering back emerged another swarm of golden orbs, which proceeded to shoot forward through space to join the others far ahead of it. The massive crystalized object may have been moving fast, but it was quickly left behind by the shining spheres as they rocketed forward at dizzying speeds. As they traveled, the distance between them began to equalize across a vast distance. They now formed a line through space.

A path.

As the newest batch of orbs sailed forward, their golden light reflected across the hungry eyes of their creator as it sped toward its destination.

And at the other end of the vast path of gold, many light-years beyond the being’s gaze, the light of the orbs finally fell upon that destination. The spheres did not slow. Below them was their resting place. The planet where their energy would finally take root. The home of the force they’d been created to help destroy.

The orbs continued onwards, surrounded at first by fire, then by clouds, and finally by an expanse of blue laid out before them in all directions. Then, a small, dark speck appeared, a speck that steadily grew larger as the orbs reached the final seconds of their journey.

Moments later, the tropical paradise below them briefly shone gold in the night before its silent peace was shattered. The impact of the orbs sent rocks, sparks, and mounds of displaced dirt flying into the air. One by one, the orbs smashed into the island, turning the center of the lush landmass into a field of craters.

Nearby, obscured within the thick foliage of the forest, two large, round eyes began to glow red with fear.

And several miles away, deep in the waters of the South Pacific Ocean, a mighty roar thundered through the depths…
