UPDATE #74 (5/1/21): GNP vs. SPR!

Happy May, readers!

This is a short little update (and a slightly delayed one, at that), but nevertheless, here it is!

I don’t often dedicate main updates to things like convention or podcast appearances, but in this particular case, I figured I’d bend my rule a little bit as a way of showing some much-deserved support to a podcast I recently appeared on as a guest.

The podcast in question is a video game-themed show called Some Patches Required, or SPR for short. The show is hosted by two awesome guys named Zak Frank and Aaron DiManna, and if the last name of that second dude sounds familiar, that’s because he’s my honest-to-goodness brother! When they asked me to come onboard for an episode discussing video games based on licensed IPs (and offered me the chance to use Godzilla as an example), I naturally jumped at the chance.

The end result is a pretty darn fun episode, and a great trip down memory lane that I was thrilled to be a part of. Our topics include Godzilla (natch), Jurassic Park, weird NES titles, Shrek, Home Improvement, and… The Emperor’s New Groove? It all makes sense when you listen, trust me.

The episode also features a surprise cameo from my living-room window. Oops.

Appearing on this episode was a lot of fun, and SPR is an all-around fantastic show that anyone who enjoys video-game culture should definitely make a habit of listening to. If you’d like to check the episode out, follow this link and get listenin’! (Do be aware, though, that this episode contains explicit content and a light sprinkling of naughty language. The GNP is a family-friendly project and website, so if you’re a parent, please be advised that this podcast might not be appropriate for young G-Fans.)

While I’m here, there was one more thing I wanted to mention. I’ve been lucky enough to make a LOT of podcast appearances over the last couple of years, which has given me the fantastic opportunity to connect with other creative kaiju fans and celebrate the monsters we all love. If listening to my voice pontificate on the intricacies and awesome aspects of creature features sounds like your cup of tea, all of my podcast appearances are archived and linked on this site’s Press & Appearances page. Give some of them a listen if you’re so inclined, and if you do, let me know if you enjoyed them!

That’s all for now, but I’ll be back soon with another update. I’ve got something really, really cool planned for May, and I can’t wait to share it with all of you!

Until then, take care, everyone!

UPDATE #73 (4/22/2021): Godzilla vs. Hedorah: Chapter 6 Attacks for Earth Day 2021!

Hello, and Happy Earth Day!

As 2021 trudges on and the world (both literally and metaphorically) gets a little bit brighter, work on the GNP continues in earnest. In fact, with any luck, this update won’t be the only one I’ll be writing this week!

But more on that later. Today, a shiny (or should that be slimy?) new chapter of the GODZILLA NOVELIZATION PROJECT’s ongoing adaptation of Godzilla vs. Hedorah has been published, and WOW was this one ever a fun challenge to write. This book has always been a particularly challenging adaptation to tackle, but this chapter presented a few exciting hurdles that needed to be jumped. From writing smooth transitions for Yoshimitsu Banno’s frenetic editing and translating the infamous “fish heads” scene to – and believe it or not, this is 100% true – crafting the very first full-on monster battle since the GNP was launched (!), creating this chapter was a doozy. But don’t worry, it was the good kind of doozy!

Check out the chapter right here. I hope you enjoy the monster fights, hippies, and hallucinogenic fish heads that await you!

See you soon for the next (super awesome) update!

UPDATE #72 (2/22/2021): The GNP Turns 3! Time for a Status Report, Some Gratitude and a Tease for the Future!

Howdy, readers!

I hope you’re comfortable, because this update is going to be a bit on the hefty side. But in a good way, I assure you!

Today marks the official 3rd anniversary of the GODZILLA NOVELIZAION PROJECT, and I’ll be honest, it’s kind of crazy to think that I’ve been as this for that long. Three years isn’t really that long in the grand scheme of things, but when I look back on how much has happened since I first launched the project in 2018, it kind of blows my mind.

Since then, this project has evolved from a simple idea in my head into a full-blown community of readers and fans. If you had told me three years ago that I’d be asked “when’s your next chapter coming out?” or “would you be interested in being interviewed for my podcast?” I wouldn’t have believed it. On a similar note, any suggestion that I’d have a growing army of money-donating patrons, over 2,300 Twitter followers, and an opinion/perspective that my fellow kaiju fans were actively interested in hearing would’ve been dismissed as wishful thinking.

And yet, amazingly, here we are.

I’ve said it many times before, and I’m about to say it again: the amount of love and support I’ve gotten from fans like you since launching the GNP has been nothing short of remarkable. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all for continuing to read along and being awesome fans.

Anyway, enough of the mushy stuff for now.  As per tradition, it’s once again time to bring you the latest installment of the GNP’s patented (and long winded) STATUS REPORT! This bi-annual deep-dive into the status of every ongoing aspect of the project has been an important part of keeping all of you informed and in the loop, and a great way for me to take stock and look at the progress that’s been made. I’ll do my best to keep this status report brief, especially because I’d like to dedicate a solid chunk of this update to looking ahead to the future. There are some amazing things coming down the line in the coming months, and I can’t wait to share all of it with you!

But before we get to that, let’s break down the current status of every book, short story, timeline, and more. Like I said before, make sure you’re comfy!

THE NOVELIZATIONS

GODZILLA: THE UNOFFICIAL NOVELIZATION

Not much to say here, except to reiterate that crafting Chapter 3 has been a bit of a creative challenge! I’ve discussed it elsewhere, but in short, the next few chapters of this particular novelization will be unique challenges that I’ve been slowly tackling over the months. Due to currently focusing on other novelizations, work on this particular adaptation has been slow. However, this is a book that I get asked about frequently, with many readers telling me that this is their favorite adaptation on the site. So if you’ve been waiting patiently for Godzilla: Chapter 3, don’t worry… it’s coming!

KING KONG VS. GODZILLA: THE UNOFFICIAL NOVELIZATION

As I said in the last status report, the adaptation of this film (which is based on the legendary original Japanese cut of the film, unavailable in the United States until recently) has been a unique and exciting opportunity for the GNP.  To be able to present Honda and Sekizawa’s original, hilariously satirical vision to western readers is truly an honor, and it’s something I’m definitely taking my time on.

Only Chapter 1 has been completed and posted thus far, and my continuing research into the period (specifically the Japanese “Economic Miracle” and its effects on television, advertising, and big business) has prevented me from converting my outlines into further chapters. However, this remains another popular adaptation on the site (despite consisting of a single chapter!), so once I feel satisfied with the research, work on the next chapter can continue.

MOTHRA VS. GODZILLA: THE UNOFFICIAL NOVELIZATION

As mentioned last time, this is another novelization that requires a surprising amount of research.  How did politics on a local level work in 1964?  What does the Kurata Beach disaster communicate in regard to the modernization, industrialization, and urban expansion of Japan during such a prosperous decade?  How big a role did the press play at the time, and just what was the price of a chicken egg back then?  Lots to discover, and lots to learn!

All that said, the next chapter (and the next “in universe” newspaper article penned by Akira Takarada’s character, Ichiro Sakai) has been outlined and given a fair amount of research. The next part of the story will begin with the Sakai article, and then move into the examination of the “monster egg” by our heroes… and one very smarmy villain. Stay tuned!

ALL MONSTERS ATTACK: THE UNOFFICIAL NOVELIZATION

Two chapters in, and this adaptation remains a joy to write. The most recent chapter was received very well, and work on the next one is on-again, off-again. Research into the tumultuous era that produced this unique story is ongoing, and putting this oft-derided film into its proper historical context remains a massively important part of this adaptation. I’m not sure when the next chapter is coming, but I hope it’s soon!

GODZILLA VS. HEDORAH: THE UNOFFICIAL NOVELIZATION

I’ll have a bit more to say about this particular novelization’s development in the coming months, but as of this update, it remains the longest novel on the site, currently sitting at six chapters (including the prologue!) The chance to take a film so infamous for is visuals and translate it into the written word is a thrill, and often times a serious challenge. But I’ve been enjoying it immensely, as is evidenced by how much work has been done on the book! In fact, the next chapter has already been partially written, and more have been planned and outlined. I’ve got big plans for this book, and I’ll be sharing those plans soon, so stay tuned!

GODZILLA VS. GIGAN: THE UNIFFICIAL NOVELIZATION

Talk about a fun novelization to write! I’ve always loved the characters in this film, and having the opportunity to explore them deeper is a true thrill. That fun has been reflected in this novel’s progress; at four chapters and counting, Gigan is now the second longest book on the website! Readers have really been enjoying this one, and I’m happy to announce that the next chapter is being written as we speak.

GODZILLA VS. MEGALON: THE UNOFFICIAL NOVELIZATION

This is another book I’ve put on the back burner over the last few months. While readers were enjoying it, I hit a few snags and decided my creative energies were best directed elsewhere. That said, Chapter 2 is still being converted from an outline/notes to actual chapter. I’m not sure when to expect this one, but rest assured, it’s coming!

GODZILLA VS. MECHAGODZILLA: THE UNOFFICIAL NOVELIZATION

Unfortunately, the status on this book remains the same as the last time progress was shared a few months ago.  Much like Mothra vs. Godzilla, a surprising amount of research is required to make this novel authentic.  Specifically, knowledge of the history of Okinawa, it’s past and then (1974) current relationship to Japan, and its unique religious background are all necessary in presenting an accurate portrayal of the setting of the story.

The good news is that research into these topics is going well, if slowly.  Once I have acquired the necessary knowledge to accurately portray the setting of the film, then work on the next chapter will resume.  Hopefully it doesn’t take too much longer!

GODZILLA VS. SPACEGODZILLA: THE UNOFFICIAL NOVELIZATION

This is the most recent novel started on the site, and as of this writing, it is planned to be the last for some time. As mentioned elsewhere, the focus of the project is now squarely on crafting new chapters for already started books. The entire idea behind having multiple adaptations being worked on at the same time was to give the site some variety during its early days, and after two-and-a-half years, I felt that the variety I was looking for was finally in place.

That said, the adaptation of Spacegodzilla has been wonderful to work on, as it’s always been a personal favorite film of mine in the franchise, as well as a film that I feel is far better than its reputation. Chapter 2 is making progress, and I’m hoping to have it ready to publish sometime before summer.

GMK: THE UNOFFICIAL NOVELIZATION

Without getting too much into the story here, this is a particularly special adaptation for the GNP. This book was a special request from a wonderful Godzilla fan named Josh, a young man whose bravery in the face of life-altering health issues continues to humble me. Nearly two years after #GodzillaforJosh started trending on social media, I couldn’t be more thrilled that Josh is thriving and remains both loved and supported by Godzilla fans far and wide.

First and foremost, this book is for him. The next chapter will be coming before too long, and I can’t wait for both Josh and all of you to read it.

GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA: THE UNOFFICIAL NOVELIZATION

As mentioned elsewhere, this story is a unique one for the project as it is being told from MULTIPLE perspectives, including jumping between first-person accounts of the film’s events (such as the Prologue taking Akane’s perspective) and traditional third-person chapters. The final result should make for an interesting (and hopefully coherent) read that continues to be an exciting challenge to write! The next chapter will assume a new perspective as the events following Godzilla’s initial nighttime attack are seen through the eyes of the government, specifically Kumi Mizuno and Akira Nakao’s characters.

THE SHORT STORIES

CASEFILE: “MATANGO”

This one – no pun intended – has been an interesting case. The story – told as an “in-universe” testimony delivered by the film’s sole survivor upon his rescue – currently consists of five parts, plus an introduction. After dedicating a lot of time to writing what I estimate to be half the story (meaning that you can expect it to clock in at ten parts once it’s done), extenuating circumstances in my life caused me to stop for a while, and when work on the GNP resumed, I began working on another adaptation instead. With much of my focus on other books at the moment, this is one of the stories I haven’t touched in a hot minute. Rest assured, however, that Part 6 has been fully outlined, and half written, so this tale of madness and mushrooms should be continuing soon…

THE TIMELINES

Ever since launching the Timeline section of the site, I have been absolutely blown away by the amount of attention it has gotten. Even on days when the novelizations receive little web traffic, all of the timelines get an often shocking number of views. It’s been humbling to see that all the hard work that goes into researching, cataloguing, and writing the (sometimes obscure) facts in these timelines is being appreciated and enjoyed by fans!

Work on the timelines has slowed in recent months due to focus on other projects, but work is still being done behind the scenes on research for future updates. Look for events from several drafts of the shooting script for the 1998 film (which has led to some interesting discoveries!), several publications released to promote the film, both the adult and junior novelizations, episodes of the animated series, two Godzilla: The Series comics, and even the GameBoy game coming to the Sony Timeline soon!

The Anime Timeline continues to be one of the site’s most popular pages, even with more than two years having elapsed since the release of the final film in the trilogy. Expect additions pertaining to the events of Planet of the Monsters to be published to the timeline in the near future!

The MonsterVerse Timeline has probably been the most interesting page to watch over the last few months. With the hype building toward next month’s release of Godzilla vs. Kong, this timeline has been exploding on the site. It’s been clicked on nearly 700 times in the last two months alone, making it the site’s most popular page of the year so far. Researching and updating this timeline is an ever-evolving process, especially with the bevy of new lore that’s set to come out surrounding Godzilla vs. Kong. Info on the events of Kong: Skull Island is due to hit the timeline at some point soon.

Lastly, there’s the Showa Timeline. This project has been a long time in the making, and when it was finally launched last year, the response was… well, overwhelming. I’m talking HUNDREDS of hits on the website within the first few days of its publishing. Talk about an amazing reception! I’m not sure when the next update will be coming, but I’m hoping it’ll be a big one to make up for the long wait!

THE “MONSTER MUSINGS” BLOG

This is another part of the site that has slowed down considerably. While I’m proud of the material published already, I really want the idea of behind-the-scenes blogs (and general pontifications on all things kaiju) to be a bigger part of not just the GNP, but of my overall writing contributions to the Godzilla fandom.

That said, I’m considering a radical shift in direction for the Monster Musings. It’s an exciting possibility, and I’ll be sure to share more with you as it develops…

EVERYTHING ELSE

As always, there’s a LOT more going on behind the scenes of the GODZILLA NOVELIZATION PROJECT than it might seem! There are a ton of chapters that have been outlined, and a number of concepts that have been documented for future use. Research on various aspects of the series continues on a daily basis, and new opportunities for collaboration and promotion are manifesting for the project, including merch production, potential audio books, and more!

What makes all of these opportunities and moments of growth so amazing is that most of them occurred during a year in which it seemed very little positivity occurred. Despite the unprecedented, frightening, and isolating time we’ve been living in for the last year, so much good did happen. All around the world, kaiju fans came together to laugh, have fun, and keep each other sane. Regardless of the physical distances between us, we found a way to celebrate monsters together. It was an amazing thing to see, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have been a part of such positivity. Hearing readers tell me that they read and enjoyed the GNP throughout 2020, and that it helped entertain them during a difficult year, means more to me than I could ever effectively put into words. Spreading smiles and positivity is what I’m all about, and if anything I did over this last year made you smile, I’m truly honored.

And WOW did I ever get to do a lot last year. Since the GNP’s previous anniversary, the project has:

  • Published 18 updates
  • Been visited over 15,000 times by more than 5,000 fans
  • Completed additional chapters to three different books
  • Completed two short stories and one blog
  • Written a full comedic short story for April Fool’s Day
  • Launched the Showa Timeline
  • Added custom images to each book, short story, and timeline

And…

  • Ditched the free version of the website for an add-free, better-looking professional version

That’s quite a lot! But wait, there’s more!

In addition to working on the GNP, I was able to do a lot if incredibly exciting things within the kaiju fan community, some of which were bucket-list items that I still can’t believe I got to do.

Over the last year, I was able to:

Yeah, I’d say that’s a lot!

Through it all, I’ve been blown away by how supportive each and every one of you continue to be. Whether you’re a casual visitor to the site or one of my wonderful Patreon supporters, it’s your kindness, dedication, and willingness to take time out of your day to read my work that truly fuels this project. You’ll never know how unbelievably grateful I am for each and every one of you.

A QUICK TEASE FOR THE FUTURE!

Before I wrap up this status report, I wanted to leave you with a little taste for what you can expect from the GODZILLA NOVELIZATION PROJECT in the coming months.

As a general rule, I don’t tend to plan things too far ahead when it comes to the GNP. More often than not, I set goals for myself and, when I achieve those goals, I share the end results with my readers. This year, while much of that will remain the same, I’ll be trying something a little bit different…

I won’t be revealing too much too soon, but what I will say is that the GNP has three big goals for this year. Three big projects that I’ll be dedicating my time to over the next few months, all of which have the closest thing to a “hard deadline” the GNP has ever set for itself.

I’ll be keeping two of those projects close to the chest for the time being, but since y’all are so awesome, I figured that the GNP’s 3rd anniversary was as good a time as any to drop a teaser for the third one…

2021 is going to be a big year for kaiju films, TV shows, comics, and more. But it’s also a significant year for any fan of classic monsters, particularly those of the Japanese variety. 60 years ago this spring, a little movie you may have heard of featuring a certain giant insect-goddess released in theaters, forever changing the kaiju genre and creating a legacy that extends all the way to today.

That’s right: 2021 marks six decades of Mothra. And not just the character, but the classic film that bears her name. Ishiro Honda’s 1961 masterpiece is considered to be one of the greatest monster films ever made, and one of the best examples of Japanese fantasy filmmaking of all time. It’s a classic through and through, and it’s always been one of my favorite films.

So, to celebrate its 60th anniversary, the GNP is planning a brand-new project that aims to adapt its story in a unique (and hopefully entertaining) way. I won’t way too much yet, but just know that I am incredibly excited to be tackling this amazing story, and I hope I can do justice to this important and wonderful film.

Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks!

………………………………………………

Well, I think that’s just about as much as my fingers can type! This was a long read, so congratulations if you made it this far down the preceding wall of text! I feel it’s important to keep you guys in the loop, so hopefully these status reports are appreciated.

That said, I’d like to end this Status Report by, once again, thanking you all for your support, your encouragement, your patience, and your faith. Being able to pursue this dream is an incredible gift, and doing it without readers would be a difficult challenge, to say the least. It has been one heck of an amazing three years, but I assure you, we are just getting started. There will be much more to read (and write!), more camaraderie to be enjoyed, and (hopefully!) more fun to be had. I hope you’ll all continue to come along for the ride.

Thanks to you all! Stay happy, stay safe, and, as always, Long Live the King!

UPDATE #71 (1/16/21): GNP Interviewed for Article on Movie Novelizations!

Greetings, all!

This won’t be a long update, but I wanted to let you all know about a recently-published article that I was interviewed for!

Yesterday, the website KnowYourMeme.com posted an article entitled “Fandom in Context: The Enduring Allure of Movie Novelizations,” which delves into the history of the genre while also exploring the reasons behind why readers have come to love these books so much. The article’s author, KnowYourMeme.com senior editor Matt Schimkowitz, conducted several interviews with film novelization fans/collectors, and – wouldn’t you know it – one of them was me!

I answered a few questions about the GNP, and then gave some thoughts on what makes movie novelizations so special. My interview snippets were then incorporated into the final article.

This was a lovely surprise, and it meant a lot that Matt reached out to me for my thoughts. I was thrilled to contribute to the article, and I hope you’ll all give it a read!

Check out the article here.

Stay tuned for another GNP update coming soon!

UPDATE #70 (12/25/2020): A Christmas Gift, a Smog Monster, and a Few Words of Gratitude

Hey, everyone! Merry Christmas!

Wow, it’s hard to believe that 2020 is almost over. And as I’m sure you’ll all agree, its passing will not be mourned. This was truly an unprecedented year, full of unbelievable challenges and an overwhelming feeling of hopelessness. But as December draws to a close, I dearly hope that every one of you reading this has found the time to enjoy the holidays in whatever ways you possibly could. With any luck, you’ve been able to spend time with family, relax, and smile. The holiday season has always been a great time of year for seeking positivity and remembering that, no matter how hard things are, you are loved. And this year, we all need to feel that more than ever.

While this year may have been unprecedentedly difficult, it was also full of many bright spots. For my part, I saw a surge of creativity from the Godzilla fan community that I’d never seen before. Despite the distances between us, fans found ways to get together and watch movies, host conventions, and share their art, podcasts, writing, and more with fellow kaiju enthusiasts. We entertained each other, laughed with each other, and kept each other sane. It was a beautiful thing to see, and I hope to see it continue long after the current situation has passed.

Why am I mentioning all of this? Well, because I was lucky enough to be a part of this surge of positivity and long-distance connection throughout the year. More GNP readers have reached out to tell me how much they’ve enjoyed the project this year than in any previous year since the project launched.  I’ve seen so much support for this endeavor, and heard so many lovely things from all of you, that even in these difficult times, I can’t help but feel incredibly, deeply blessed.

Alright, that’s enough of the mushy stuff. To sum up, I’ll just say this: this year may have been difficult, but what I’ll always remember about 2020 is all of you; your support, your kind words, and your all-around awesomeness.

And so, on this very special Christmas day, I have a little gift for all of you. It may not be a lot, but I hope it’ll lift a few spirits.

One of the GNP books that I get the most requests to continue writing is my adaptation of 1971’s Godzilla vs. Hedorah. Ever since I first published Chapter 1 way back in 2018, this book has been a favorite among readers, and one that I get asked about frequently. It’s been a while since I’ve returned to researching/writing this particular adaptation, but I’m happy to announce that, as of today, the Hedorah drought is officially over!

The GNP is proud to present, at long last, Godzilla vs. Hedorah: Chapter 5!

Thank you all for being such amazing readers, G-fans, and people. I couldn’t be more grateful for all the kindness and support you’ve shown me, and as 2020 finally enters the realm of past tense, I hope I can continue to be worthy of that support.

Happy reading, Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good (and safe) night!

UPDATE #69 (11/3/20): My Other Godzilla Novelization… uh, Endeavor, PROJECT: KAYAMA, is Live!

Howdy, readers!

First off, happy Godzilla Day! November 3rd marks the release date of 1954’s Godzilla, and is therefore a kind of sacred day for monster fans. And this year, the GNP celebrated in style. Or, at least I did. Let me explain…

If you’ve been following along with the GNP’s social media, you probably know that I’ve been working on something big that was due to be released today. Well, the big moment is finally here, and I can’t wait to tell you about it!

Long story short, over the last five months, I’ve been collaborating on a seriously awesome project. It’s not GNP-related, but oddly enough, it almost is… because it involves a Godzilla novelization! Confused? Here’s the story.

In 1954, the original Godzilla was given a full novelization by noted sci-fi author Shigeru Kayama. It was Kayama who actually created the outline of the film before it was even named Godzilla. It was from his mind that ideas like Odo Island, Godzilla’s atomic ray, and the Oxygen Destroyer originated.

This book – which, like the best of novelizations, contained a number of deviations and additions not seen in the film – has been a kind of Godzilla Holy Grail for decades: rare, unavailable in English, and obscure.

Until now.

After 66 years of unavailability and obscurity in the West, I – along with my good friend, the talented artist Robert Monsarrat – am incredibly proud to have created the first full English-language translation of Shigeru Kayama’s GODZILLA!

It took a lot of work, but after months of translating, editing, illustrating, and research, Kayama’s book finally existed in a language we could read.

Our edition of the novel – fully illustrated by Robert’s amazing artwork – is now available to read on a new website, 100% free for any G-fan who wants to check it out.

This might be the most ambitious Godzilla novelization… uh, project that I’ve worked on so far. It was a labor of love, and I’ll definitely be on hand to talk about it and answer any questions for those who are interested!

The one unfortunate thing is that PROJECT: KAYAMA took a fair chunk of time away from writing for this project. Now that it’s done, don’t worry: more GNP chapters are coming soon. But yeah, being able to work on bringing this amazing novel to English-speaking fans was an amazing opportunity I had to jump on. It’s also an extension of the work I’ve done here on the GNP, and something that I’ve wanted to do for years. I’m incredibly glad – and lucky – to have done it.

So, if you’re interested in checking out this fascinating piece of Godzilla’s history, follow this link and check it out!

Happy 66th birthday to the King of the Monsters, and happy reading to you!

UPDATE #68 (9/11/20): The Latest GNP Status Report is Live!

Happy September, kaiju fans!

Wow, can you believe it’s already nearly fall? What a long, strange year it’s been… and yes, I know that’s the understatement to end all understatements.

Anyway, as per tradition, it’s time to bring you the latest installment of the GNP’s patented (and long winded) STATUS REPORT! This bi-annual deep-dive into the status of every ongoing aspect of the project has been an important part of keeping all of you informed and in the loop, and a great way for me to take stock and look at the progress that’s been made. This year’s report will see a lot of updates noted, both in terms of content and site improvements/aesthetics. There are new chapters, Timelines, blogs, logos, Patreon updates, big plans and exciting goals to discuss (and knowing how I tend to write these things, it’ll likely to be a long read), so without further do, let’s get this party started!

THE NOVELIZATIONS

GODZILLA: THE UNOFFICIAL NOVELIZATION

Not much to say here, except to reiterate that crafting Chapter 3 has been a bit of a creative challenge! In the previous Status Report, I noted that I was experimenting with multiple potential perspectives to tell the events of Chapter 3. If you’ve read the first two chapters and are familiar with the order of events in the film, then you know this next chapter will bring the action first to the panicked headquarters of the Nankai Steamship Company, and then to the Pacific to witness the sinking of the Bingo-Maru.

Due to currently focusing on other novelizations, work on this particular adaptation has stopped for the time being. However, this is a book that I get asked about frequently, with many readers telling me that this is their favorite adaptation on the site. So if you’ve been waiting patiently for Godzilla: Chapter 3, don’t worry… its coming!

GODZILLA VS. HEDORAH: THE UNOFFICIAL NOVELIZATION

As mentioned a few months ago, the process of writing this truly INSANE film as a book has been one of the most enjoyable creative experiences of my life.  This is evident in the fact that Hedorah is, as of this writing, the longest novel on the site, currently sitting at five chapters (including the prologue)!  The chance to take a film so infamous for is visuals and translate it into the written word is a thrill, and often times a serious challenge. (Since the last update, these challenges were chronicled in this GNP Monster Musing Blog.)

Although work on this one has slowed down in recent months, Chapter 5 is shaping up nicely, and further chapters are already outlined. That psychedelic nightclub won’t be safe much longer…

In fact, as of right now… drumroll please… this is a top contender for being the first completed book on the site! I make no promises, and I still have a LONG way to go, but if I can keep up the momentum (and the support of readers like you continues), it’s entirely possible that this adaptation will be nearing completion around the time of the next Status Report. Will I succeed? Time will tell…

GODZILLA VS. MEGALON: THE UNOFFICIAL NOVELIZATION

This is another book I’ve hit a few roadblocks on.  As I’ve discussed before, one of Megalon’s biggest issues as a film is its cardboard cutout characters.  Therefore, as I refuse to write for cardboard cutouts, it falls to me to provide them with the character they are lacking.  It all boils down to this: I’ve committed to thinking harder and longer about Godzilla vs. Megalon than perhaps a human brain ought to.

And – perhaps predictably – I’m enjoying it immensely.

Chapter 2 is making excellent progress, with the conversion from outline/notes to actual chapter well underway.  I’m not sure when to expect this one, but rest assured, its coming!

Chapter 2 is making progress, and I’m hoping to have it ready to publish before next year’s G-FEST.

Nearly a year and a half after #GodzillaforJosh started trending on social media, I couldn’t be more thrilled that Josh is thriving and remains both loved and supported by Godzilla fans far and wide.

Expect it soon!

AND YET ANOTHER?

If you read my last status report, then you’ll remember that there was a mystery project gathering dust on my laptop’s hard drive turned out to be the prologue to Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla. Well, in the interceding months, that mystery project has been replaced with ANOTHER mystery project! Which story could it be adapting? You’ll have to wait to find out…

Ain’t I a stinker?

THE SHORT STORIES

CASEFILE: “MATANGO”

This one – no pun intended – has been an interesting case. The story – told as an “in-universe” testimony delivered by the film’s sole survivor upon his rescue – currently consists of five parts, plus an introduction. After dedicating a lot of time to writing what I estimate to be half the story (meaning that you can expect it to clock in at ten parts once it’s done), extenuating circumstances in my life caused me to stop for a while, and when work on the GNP resumed, I began working on another adaptation instead. With much of my focus on Gigan at the moment, this is one of the stories I haven’t touched in a hot minute.

The Anime Timeline continues to be one of the site’s most popular pages, even with more than a year and a half having elapsed since the release of the final film in the trilogy. Expect additions pertaining to the events of Planet of the Monsters to be published to the timeline in the near future!

Work on the Monsterverse Timeline is an ever-evolving process, especially with the bevy of new lore that has come out in the wake of 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Info on the events of Kong: Skull Island is due to hit the timeline soon, and research into the lore of Godzilla vs. Kong will begin when… well, whenever the movie finally begins its marketing!

Lastly, there’s the Showa Timeline. This project has been a long time in the making, and it was finally launched back in July to coincide with a panel I co-presented on the subject of Showa-era continuity for Kyle Yount’s Kaiju Con-Line. (That panel can be listened to – in all its technical difficult-riddled glory – right here.) The response to this Timeline has been… well, overwhelming. I’m talking HUNDREDS of hits on the website within the first few days of its publishing. Talk about an amazing reception! I couldn’t be more grateful to the readers who’ve checked it out, and I’m happy to announce that the next part of the Timeline is pretty much complete and will hit the site in the next few weeks!

THE “MONSTER MUSINGS” BLOG

This is another part of the site that has slowed down considerably. While I’m proud of the material published already (especially the recently posted examination of Hedorah’s symbolic imagery I mentioned earlier), I really want the idea of behind-the-scenes blogs (and general pontifications on all things kaiju) to be a bigger part of not just the GNP, but of my overall writing contributions to the Godzilla fandom.

Research on various aspects of the series continues on a daily basis, and new opportunities for collaboration and promotion are manifesting for the project!

First up is a massive one in terms of site aesthetics. Thanks to the support of my incredible Patreon peeps, the website is no longer a janky, ad-filled mess. The artist formerly known as godzillanovelizationproject.wordpress.com is no more… and the shiny new godzillanovelizaionproject.com has risen to take its place! I now own the domain, and as a result, the site runs smoother, looks better, and has been getting even more traffic! This would not have been possible without the generous aid of my Patrons, so HUGE thanks to Aaron “Rant Reviews” DiManna, Alison Fey, Nathan “Monster Island Film Vault” Marchand, Jane Meyer, Jacob M. Spencer, Kyoei Toshi, Mabause Cast Podcast, and of course, the inimitable Jimmy From NASA for helping to make this gigantic improvement to the GNP possible! You are all, quite literally, the BEST.

On the subject of Patreon, I’m glad to announce that a few alterations and clarifications have been made. Supporting for only $1 a month gets your name enshrined on the website’s dedication page and entitles you to a bevy of Patron-exclusive posts, blogs, BTS material and more. Higher tiers include such perks as reading all new chapters and blogs 24 hours before anyone else, and even the chance to have your name inserted into the Godzilla novelization of your choice! If any of that sounds intriguing to you, check the page out here and see if anything tickles your fancy.

Now on to the subject of possible GNP merch (something I get asked about more often than I honestly thought I would!). As mentioned before, I’ve been approached by several parties that are interested in producing items for the project, which is definitely exciting! I’ve even crafted prototype images of a few of these items, which only Patreon supporters have seen thus far. If things like GNP shirts/apparel, buttons/pins, stickers, coffee mugs, or other goodies interest you, please let me know, and seeking avenues to get that stuff produced will become a priority! (But remember, making this stuff isn’t cheap, and most of my GNP budget goes to research materials. There is currently a goal on my Patreon page that states that, if the project starts making $50 a month from supporters, the production of merch can officially begin! As of this Status Report’s writing, I’m extremely close to hitting this goal, and only a few more dollars a month will unlock it. If this is something you want to see happen, donating even a dollar a month on Patreon REALLY helps! The more backers I get, the better merch I can offer!)

Beyond the realm of website improvements and Patreon plugging, there have been a number of other fun things going on with the project, yours truly, and various combinations thereof. As mentioned before, I was a panelist during July’s Kaiju Con-Line event. With G-FEST having been canceled this year, Kaijucast creator and all-around awesome dude Kyle Yount took it upon himself to put on an online convention for kaiju fans. Despite some insane technical difficulties, fellow panelist Nathan Marchand and myself trudged through and finished our presentation. BIG thanks to Kyle for saving our proverbial rear ends when things went south; I’m absolutely buying you a drink at G-FEST next year, dude. In addition to this, I got to – quite literally – act out my lifelong dream of voice acting not once, but TWICE this summer! I appeared in the role of Dr. Hikaru Shida in the Kaijusaurus Podcast’s production of Godzilla Unmade: Bride of Godzilla?, and played a Matango-obsessed scientist named Dr. Dourif in Nate’s hit podcast, The Monster Island Film Vault. I had SO MUCH FUN playing these roles, and I can’t wait to do more voice acting in the future!

Speaking of podcasts, you can expect to hear me on more of them in the future! By the time this update is posted, I’ll have recorded an interview with The Kaiju Groupie Podcast, which I’m super looking forward to. I’ll also be returning to MIFV for a celebration of the show’s one-year anniversary, and I’m also booked to appear on the Kaiju Apostle Podcast in the near future. I am, to put it mildly, quite excited!

And finally – in another GNP tradition – I’ll leave you with a cryptic tease for an upcoming development that I’m super excited about. Something that comes up fairly often when readers ask me questions is the possibility of one day producing audio book versions of the finished GNP novels. I’ve mentioned before that this is something I’d absolutely love to do, but wasn’t sure where to start, when such a development would occur, or if it were even possible to do in the high-quality way I’d require. Well, I can’t give too much away yet, but an avenue for converting at least one of the GNP’s novelizations into a full, high-quality audio book has opened up. I’ll share more when things get finalized (and remember, this won’t happen until books start getting finished), but trust me… if this pans out, it’ll absolutely be worth the wait.

It has been one heck of an amazing few years, but I assure you, we are just getting started. There will be much more to read (and write!), more camaraderie to be enjoyed, and (hopefully!) more fun to be had. I hope you’ll all continue to come along for the ride.

Thanks to you all! Onward to Fall!

UPDATE #67 (8/28/20): Godzilla vs. Gigan Continues with its 4th Exciting Chapter!

Happy Almost-Fall, readers!

The GODZILLA NOVELIZATION PROJECT is proud to announce that the next chapter of Godzilla vs. Gigan is complete, and has been published for your (hopeful) reading pleasure!

In this installment, Gengo heads to World Children’s Land’s corporate HQ, and literally crashes into a mystery involving a strange stolen data tape…

This chapter is a bit shorter than the previous one, so it shouldn’t be too long of a read. This particular GNP adaptation is making excellent progress, and it shouldn’t be too much longer until the next chapter is published!

Oh, how I love progress.

Click here to start reading Godzilla vs. Gigan: Chapter 4. Be sure to let me know what you thought of it when you’re done, and stay tuned for more exciting GNP content coming your way soon!

UPDATE #66 (7/25/20): Voice Acting for “Godzilla Unmade” and MIFV!

Happy Saturday, readers!

A quick disclaimer: this update has almost nothing to do with the GNP. This is just something I wanted to share with everyone!

For those who might not know, the last three weeks have seen the release of an ambitious series of audio dramas called “Godzilla Unmade”. This series of podcast-based “radio” plays are adaptations of real Godzilla film pitches that never got produced. Steven Sloss, host of the Kaijusaurus Podcast, assembled an incredible team of writers and artists to help him create three full audio drama adaptions of a trio of lost G-films: Godzilla vs. Gargantua (here called Godzilla vs. The Last Gargantua), Godzilla vs. Hedorah II, and last but not least, the famously insane Bride of Godzilla? (and no, that question mark isn’t a typo).

When auditions opened up for the cast of characters back in the Spring, I knew I wanted to be a part of it. I’m certainly no actor, but I’ve always had a fascination with voice acting, and a desire to give it a try one day. I decided to bite the bullet and audition, and I’m SO glad I did.

Amazingly, I scored the role of Dr. Shida in the Bride of Godzilla? episode. Needless to say, all these months later, I’m still pinching myself.

The first episode of “Godzilla Unmade” debuted during the Kaiju Con-Line panel on the project, which I was invited to participate in! That was two weeks ago, and since then, the three episodes have been releasing to incredible reception. Bride of Godzilla? hit the internet yesterday, and I’ve been blown away and truly humbled by the kind words and compliments I’ve been given for my performance. It seems I succeeded in being entertaining, and just like with the GNP, that’s all I could ever ask for. I had the time of my life hamming it up as Dr. Shida, and I’ll always be grateful for having been given the chance to play the role.

If you’d like to give it a listen and support Steven and the hard work of his team, check it out on YouTube here and on SoundCloud here!

(And while you’re at it, isten to Godzilla vs. The Last Gargantua and Godzilla vs. Hedorah II, as well! Auditory awesomeness awaits you!)

But remarkably enough, there’s more to talk about! As it turns out, “Godzilla Unmade” wasn’t the only kaiju-related project I’ve recently lent my voice to!

As longtime GNP readers may know, I’m a frequent collaborator with/supporter of The Monster Island Film Vault podcast, created and hosted by my friend Nathan Marchand. I’ve co-hosted an episode (with more appearences on the way!), suggested films for future episodes, and even flown across the Pacific Ocean with his preposterous producer, Jimmy from NASA. Over nearly a full year of creating the show, Nathan (the REAL Nathan, not the fictionalized version of himself that he’s playing on air) has steadily been growing a mythology around the podcast, creating a “meta-story” populated by familiar monster/human/alien/robot characters, and a few original characters, as well. In the world of MIFV, pretty much any kaiju you can think of is real, and most of them call Monster Island home. When everything is canon, the storytelling possibilities are endless.

During a chat between Nate and myself about the show’s development, a funny concept came up: the idea of a supremely weird scientist who studies the title creatures of Ishiro Honda’s 1963 horror masterpiece Matango, and enjoys his job a little too much. What started as a joke quickly evolved into a character he wanted to include in the show. In my mind, the character looked and acted a bit like two specific film characters: Jack Dante (an insane inventer who builds a killer robot in the basement of a military tech company’s HQ) in the 1994 movie Death Machine, and Dr. Jonathon Gediman (an insane scientist who helps clone a lab full of killer Xenomorphs) in 1997’s Alien Ressurection.

The connection? Both of those lunatics were played by one of my favorite character actors: Brad “Chucky” Dourif.

So naturally, I suggested we name this crazy Matango scientist Dr. Dourif. Nate loved the idea, suggested the first name of Dante (Brad’s last name in Death Machine), and just like that, we had a character.

Nate decided that the character should cameo in his Matango Mini Analysis episode, and after I’d developed a voice/characterization that we liked, we recorded a faux interview over Skype. I didn’t work from a script, and ad-libbed a minute or so of dialogue. By the time we were done, we were laughing our butts off. It was a blast. Nate edited the interview into the episode, added some creepy Matango laughter into the background, and presto! Dr. Dante Dourif was born.

The episode debuted last Wednesday, and can be heard on YouTube, the MIFV website, and various other pod catchers. (Be sure to listen to Nate’s other episodes, too! He puts on a great show.)

So yeah, it’s been an interesting week, to say the least! I now have two voice acting credits to my name, and people really seem to be enjoying both performances! Like I said before, I’m absolutely NOT an actor; I’m just a goof who loves doing silly voices. But if you were entertained by my silliness, then I sincerely thank you!

That’s all for this update! With any luck, the next one will be all about new additions to the Showa Timeline. Thank you all for reading, and stay tuned for more updates as the GNP prepares to enter August!

UPDATE #65 (7/12/20): The GNP’s Showa Timeline is Live!!

Greetings, readers!

If you’re reading this update on the day it’s been published, you’ve likely just come from the Kaiju Con-Line “The Original MCU” panel that I co-hosted! If you’re reading this later, well… it honestly doesn’t matter, because the important thing is that you’re here!

Either way, here’s the gist: on Sunday, July 12th, 2020, I was lucky enough to present an in-depth panel with my friend/co-conspirator Nathan Marchand on the intricacies of Toho’s Showa-era universe of films (and one TV show). In fact, as of this writing, I’ve just finished that panel! If you watched it, I hope you were entertained (despite the insane technical difficulties…) and learned some fun stuff!

Anywho, much of the material presented in that panel came from years of research I’ve done on the subject. A lot of that research has been in preparation for the eventual publication of the GODZILLA NOVELIZATION PROJECT’s own Showa Timeline. Like the other timelines here on the site, the Showa Timeline will be an in-depth chronicle of major and minor events, from the advent of each monster to the birthdays of major characters.

A lot of the finer details and more in-depth parts of the Timeline were excised from the panel (brevity being a key factor; we only had about 40 minutes, after all!), but as I said at the end of the presentation, that info will ultimately be published in the website’s Timeline over multiple updates.

However, one thing I didn’t have time to announce was this: as of today, the first part of the Showa Timeline has been officially published!

So, if you’re a con attendee who wanted more information on the Timeline, it’s now here for you to enjoy!

So without further ado, I present Part 1 of the GNP’s Showa Timeline!

(With any luck, Part 2 should be coming soon! The material currently present on the Timeline relates to events that lead up to the 20th Century. Believe me, there’s more happening during that time period than you might think!)

Once again, I thank you all sincerely for your continuing support. If you got to check out (A.K.A. survived) the panel, I thank you for that, too! I hope you enjoy the first part of the Showa Timeline, and all of the future Showa mayhem to come!
