UPDATE #12 (4/27/18): THE TIMELINE BEGINS!

Hey there, G-Fans!  I’m excited to announce that the GNP’s long dormant “Timeline” page is finally starting to take shape, with the first addition being the first part of the “Anime Timeline”.

The Timeline page here on the website has been sitting empty since the project launched, and now I’m finally getting around to creating content for it! Essentially, the Timeline page will be a portal to multiple timelines that will chronicle major events in each era’s specific universe. These events will range from real-world happenings that have influenced the Godzilla stories (the extinction of the dinosaurs, the atomic bombings of Japan, etc.) to the events from the films themselves (monster attacks, character’s deaths, alien invasions… you get the drift!).

To start things off, I have begun with the most recently created Godzilla universe: Toho’s still ongoing “Anime” series that, by the end of the year, will be comprised of a trilogy of animated feature films. Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters is, of course, already available to watch on Netflix, and it’s sequel, Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle, is less than a month away from its theatrical release! The universe that Toho has created for this anime series is INSANE, to say the least. It’s also incredibly awesome, positing a world where decades of unending kaiju attacks have brought humanity to its knees. Countless classic Toho creatures, fleets of familiar ships, mechs, and robots, two alien races, and absolutely NO subtlety…

And all that happens BEFORE Planet of the Monsters even starts!

So, what better way to launch the GNP’s Timeline project than to tackle this crazy series of events?

So far, the Anime Timeline on the site includes only this “prequel” information, from the appearance of Kamacuras in 1999 to the launching of the Aratrum in 2048. Additions pertaining to the events seen in the actual films are coming soon.

Until then, follow this link to read the beginings of the Anime Godzilla Timeline! And stay tuned for more updates soon!

UPDATE #11 (4/22/18): THE BATTLE OF THE CENTURY BEGINS!

“THE TWO MIGHTIEST MONSTERS OF ALL TIME… IN THE MOST COLOSSAL CONFLICT THE SCREEN HAS EVER KNOWN!”

The Godzilla Novelization Project is thrilled to present the first chapter of the novel adaptation of 1962’s King Kong vs. Godzilla, the beloved 3rd entry in the franchise, and STILL the most attended Godzilla film of all time.

This is a particularly exciting opportunity for the GNP, as this adaptation will tackle the legendary Japanese version of the film, still unreleased in North America and illusive for many fans in the states. Ishiro Honda’s original, uncut epic is a very different beast from the highly altered 1963 US cut that most English-speaking fans are familiar with, and having the opportunity to present that version in English via a full novel is an exciting challenge that I am ecstatic to be tackling!

(And for fans of the US cut (and really, who isn’t?), don’t worry… I’ll be working in some references to some of its most memorable moments as I go along! Who knows, maybe I’ll do a special Steve Martin Report-style novella that tells the story from Eric Carter’s point of view…)

Click here to check out the novel’s Contents page and to read Chapter 1! Be sure to let me know what you think on Facebook, on Twitter, or here on the website! I hope you enjoy what you read.

UPDATE #10 (4/4/18): Hedorah Continues!

Howdy all, and happy April!

I’m proud to announce that the GNP’s novelization of Godzilla vs. Hedorah is moving right along, and Chapter 2 has now been added to the book’s table of contents (making it the longest novel currently on the site)!  Follow the link to see what happens after little Ken is left alone on the rocky beach (as if you all don’t already know)!

I’m really having a blast adapting this 1971 trip of a movie into the written word.  Capturing the elements that made Yoshimitsu Banno’s vision for the film so memorable has been a challenge, especially when it comes to the films oddest moments.  Hedorah is infamous for its seemingly random animated segments, acid trip hallucinations, psychedelic images of pulsating blobs and dancing skeletons, and sequences like the screaming people in the boxes, Ken’s dreams of Godzilla, and the nearly 1 minute long B&W scene that preludes the Mt. Fuji dance party.  These moments are inherently visual, so how exactly can these images be converted into words in a way that does the material justice?  Well, I’m still working on ways to accomplish a few of them, but in the end, the key is understanding the intentions behind such creative choices.  They may be odd or, as I mentioned before, seemingly random, but they are in the film for a reason.  A choice was made to include them, and that choice represented something that Banno was trying to communicate.  Understanding that communication allows for the intent to be transferred into a different medium (in this case, a book) in a way that hopefully comes across as authentic, and true to the director’s vision.

That, dear friends, is my challenge.  Thankfully, I’ve seen this film somewhere in the neighborhood of ten thousand times, and I’ve come up with some interesting angles that should allow me to preserve Banno’s more… bizarre moments in my adaptation. (A little of that can be seen in this new chapter, in which I found a way to incorporate the first of those anime-esque political cartoons into the narrative.)  Hopefully, this process allows me to not only entertain readers, but honor Banno-San and his film.

Well, I think thats enough philosophical waxing from me for one update.  There’s a new chapter for you to read, and a chapter-in-progress that I need to finish!  If you’ve been reading along with ANY GNP novelization and have been enjoying what you’ve read, be sure to let me know!  Comment here on the site, hit me up on Twitter or Facebook, or shoot me an email!  (Follow this handy link to my Contact Page if you want to chat!)  I always enjoy talking about anything and everything Godzilla or Kaiju/Tokusatsu in general, and am always excited to answer questions and hang with fellow fans.  I don’t bite, I swear!

Happy reading, and I’ll see you all in the next update!

UPDATE #9 (3/27/18): THE SOLUTION: STOP POLLUTION! SAVE THE EARTH!

“POLLUTION’S HIDEOUS SPAWN DOOMS THE EARTH TO CHOKING HORROR, AND PITS…

GODZILLA VS THE SMOG MONSTER!”

That’s right, folks! The GNP is proud to present not only the Prologue, but ALSO Chapter 1 of the unofficial novelization of Yoshimitsu Banno’s immortal tale of environmental catastrophe, fish heads, mouth harps, and flying lizards: 1971’s Godzilla vs. Hedorah!

This is a film I watched practically on loop as a child, and one that am still in love with to this day. To say it is an unusual film is the understatement to end ALL understatements, and it remains somewhat of an acquired taste in the Godzilla series. But for my money, its amazing, and its been wonderful having the opportunity to adapt Banno’s unique vision to the written word.

In fact, its been so much fun, that today’s GNP update includes TWO chapters of the adaptation! Once I started, I couldn’t stop, and just had to keep going. What can I say? I love this film!

Chapter 1 is the longest chapter I’ve written for a GNP novel so far, and hopefully its an enjoyable read. Chapter 2 is already in progress, and chances are it will be ready to send to my incredible Patreon backers within the week!

(And no worries, the following chapters for the other novels I’ve started are also in progress, so expect updates on those soon, as well!)

So, without further ado, click the link to start at the beginning! I hope you enjoy it.

UPDATE #8 (3/20/18): STEVE MARTIN, SIGNING OFF…

With this update, the GNP has officially finished its first writing project… Godzilla, King of the Monsters! – The Steve Martin Report is complete!

I have to say, this was a joy to write.  Putting myself into the place of not only the character of Martin, but the mindset of a 1950’s American reporter was definitely a challenge, but a pure delight all the way.  With Burr’s voice in my head to remind me of what his character would or wouldn’t say, I’ve created a novella that I’m actually quite proud of, and I hope that my fellow fans enjoy it to.

If you do enjoy it, be sure to let me know!  Leave comments on the site, shoot me an email, or chat with me on Facebook.  I’m curious to know what you think of the finished product.

Until then, follow this link to read Part 2.

UPDATE #7 (3/17/18): PUNCH PUNCH PUNCH! MEGALON TURNS 45!

Greetings, G-Fans!

Ah, March 17th. Green beverages are being chugged, insultingly phony Irish accents abound… and meanwhile, Godzilla fans everywhere are cheering their hero on as he pummels the daylights out of a giant cockroach.

1973’s Godzilla vs. Megalon, the delightfully insane and rightfully beloved film that thrilled a generation of baby boomers and went on to become the most widely seen Godzilla film of the entire franchise, turns 45 years old today. And to celebrate, I have completed and published the Prologue to the GNP’s novelization of the movie! Consider it a birthday present to a film I have loved since childhood… and one heck of a funny MST3K episode, of course.

More chapters are coming, but until then, check out the Prologue here!

UPDATE #6 (3/10/18): EXTRA! EXTRA! STEVE MARTIN TELLS ALL!

Greetings, readers!

It is with great excitement that I announce the GNP’s newest project… a novella in two parts (Part 1 of which is available now!) chronicling the attack of Godzilla upon Tokyo… as related by United World News’ brightest reporter…

Its Godzilla, King of the Monsters! – The Steve Martin Report!

This is a little (okay, not so little) project that I have wanted to do for a LONG time, and I’m super excited to finally get the first half completed!  Essentially, The Steve Martin Report is a first-person recounting of the events of Terry Morse’s 1956 “Americanization” of the original Godzilla, told in the form of a written report by the character of Martin, as played so memorably by the late, great Raymond Burr.  The novella is presented as a sort of “in-universe artifact”, a final word report prepared by Steve for his boss in Chicago.

In crafting this retelling of a classic tale, I had the wonderful opportunity to both include Burr’s memorable narration dialogue from the film, and work around and in-between that dialogue, filling in the gaps to create a complete recounting of the events of the film from Steve Martin’s point of view.  Blending my dialogue with the actual script was a fun challenge, and I hope I’ve done that original script – and Mr. Burr – justice with this novella.

Part 2 is nearly completed, so stay tuned for the rest of The Steve Martin Report soon!  Until then, follow the link above to begin the report!

UPDATE #5 (3/6/18): THE COSMIC MONSTER COMETH!

“SEE THE MIGHTY GODZILLA IN A FIGHT TO THE DEATH WITH HIS BIONIC DOUBLE!”

The GNP is proud to reveal the prologue to Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla: The Unofficial Novelization!  This is going to be a fun one to tackle; the 1974 debut of everyone’s favorite mechanical titan of terror is a favorite film of mine in the Godzilla series.  Its a wonderful and insane film, and a joy to adapt!

This prologue is a short one, but hopefully it conjures images of the wonderful opening sequence of the film, and makes you excited to read more!  I should be back with more chapters (to this adaptation and others) soon!

UPDATE #4 (3/2/18): SOCIAL MEDIA!

Howdy, folks!

UPDATE #3 (3/1/18)

Happy March, G-Fans!

It’s been an interesting few days at GNP Headquarters. First, I launched the official Facebook page… only to have it get locked 24 hours later. As of now, it is STILL locked. If you’re interested in following the project on Facebook, be sure to keep checking the link on the Contact page. Eventually, it will work. Eventually…

Then, I attempted to create a Twitter page, only to have a snowstorm blow in and muddle my internet connection. This issue also kept me from getting this update sent out earlier. Like I said, it’s been interesting.

But the good news (assuming my connection holds out long enough to post this) is that I was able to use that internet-less time to polish Godzilla: Chapter 2, and start preparations on another, SECRET project that I’m super excited about. More on that one soon.

Until then, here’s Godzilla: Chapter 2 for you to (hopefully) enjoy! (Again, expect a few minor edits on this and other chapters now and then.)

I’m hard at work on more chapters (and fixing/setting up my social media), so be sure to check back soon for more updates! And, if you like what I’ve written so far, leave me a comment to let me know!

Happy reading!
